About

About the Dome

The Charleston Planetarium currently features an inflatable dome, spanning 23 feet in diameter and accommodating 40 chairs. Constructed with innovative materials and next-generation technology, the inflatable dome offers an uninterrupted hemispherical projection surface. The zipper virtually disappears under projection, and our exclusive Nolux fabric darkens black areas and helps hide wrinkles. Seating for the dome includes 40 padded, movable, non-reclining chairs. Entrance through the zipper door requires visitors to step into the dome. We can lift the bottom of the dome up to accommodate those with limited mobility.

Planetarium Seating Advisory

We would like to inform our guests that our current seating, which has been generously donated, does not include headrests. While we are truly grateful for these contributions that allow us to open our doors to the public, we understand that this may affect the comfort of those with back or neck sensitivities. If you experience discomfort due to the lack of headrests, please take this into consideration when purchasing tickets. Your well-being and enjoyment remain a top priority for us, and we are actively exploring options to enhance seating accommodations in the future. We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support as we work toward making our planetarium as comfortable and accessible as possible for all visitors.
